In fact, our provider paid 93% of critical illness claims in 2013, with cancer remaining the most common reason to claim across all these benefits.
Making a difference to you when it matters.
This shows we're helping real people when they're going through tough times. Let's look at a real-life case study to see just how important protection cover is at a time when people need it most.
Critical Illness claim - Case Study
A female social worker took out reducing life with critical illness protection together with a separate life protection benefit in October 2011 to cover her new mortgage. Due to a family history of multiple sclerosis (MS) that she disclosed in her application, the provider excluded MS from her critical illness cover.
In June 2013, at the age of 47, she had a sore throat and tongue, and had difficulty opening her mouth. She was referred to a hospital where she underwent scans, and biopsies were taken. These investigations led to her being diagnosed with tonsil cancer. She had her tonsil removed and started chemotherapy.
The provider paid her critical illness claim in full in October 2013, and her separate life protection continues.
She said: 'During the most difficult time in life and when prompt service was needed and a reassuring person at the end of a phone, I have found the claims handlers were excellent.'
The financial impact of cancer
According to Macmillan Cancer Support, four out of five people diagnosed with cancer are £570 a month worse off due to their diagnosis, with almost a third struggling to pay their bills. This is because of the additional costs associated with attending regular medical appointments, modifying their home, clothing and increased day-to-day living costs, including heating bills.
A third of people diagnosed with cancer had to stop working either permanently or temporarily. Without some kind of financial protection in place, would you be able to cover these costs?
